about

BARRIO/BARYO SOUNDSYSTEM is a collection of remixes of 1960-70's Philippine pop and love ballads by experimental electronic producer Various Asses.

This selection of 45's came from Raquel Solier's Nanny, Poppy and Dad's record collection which migrated with them from the Philippines to Australia in the 1970's but were neglected in their family home; stored in a cardboard box under an open window for 30 years.

As apart of Next Wave Festival's Barrio/Baryo Soundsystem event curated by Lucreccia Quintanilla and Caroline Garcia, electronic producer Various Asses was invited to perform a very personal set that explored and celebrated her heritage.

Once meticulously cleaned and dubbed; these remixes are treated with the Various Asses' production aesthetic; confusing, humorous and emotional all at once, ideally suited for late night slow dances and dank couch potatoes.

Performing in collaboration on the night was Filipino Australian footwerk producer Yumgod (Kuya Neil Cabitingan), who also remixed a selection of the 45's in hard club methodology.
